Scuba Diving & Snorkelling
Mission Beach has two cruise companies that run daily trips to the reef, weather permitting and we recommend Calypso Dive as it is better suited to adults and the experience is second to none.
The lovely large dive boat called ‘Calypso 2’ is very well staffed by experienced dive instructors and masters. The skipper is a very friendly chap and will welcome company during the trip to the reef.
On our recent trip to the reef on Calypso Dive we were thrilled to see turtles, Minki whales, and dolphins swimming within easy sight of us as we steamed out from Clump Point at Mission Beach. Trips depart from their office next to Woolworths at 8.00am and return around 5pm.
The site that we visited this particular day is in a sheltered bay, surrounded by coral, a divine place to see the reef. With fabulously coloured corals, huge clams and even Nemo it was a terrific day of snorkelling for us both. You get the use of all your snorkelling gear in the cost of your ticket. Should you want a wetsuit, stinger suit for the summer months there is a small additional charge.
There is a rubber ducky that will drop you off along the edge of the outer reef and you can snorkel back then to the boat and experience an unbelievable sight….quite breathtaking.
Your ticket also includes a lovely buffet lunch and there is also sliced fruit, crackers and cheese. Drinks including beer, cask wine and soft drinks were available on board at an extra cost.
You can do an introductory dive with Calypso, or certified divers can get 2 great dives in during the trip.
If you are considering either of these options check out their own great site for all details and to contact them. Bookings can of course be made at the office at Djarawong upon your arrival and incur no additional charges.
If I were you, I’d bring along a couple of packets of something to munch on the way back to the dock as after 3 hours of swimming we had the munchies coming back and hit them big time.
